The Grind - Online Art Auction

Foundation One Gallery, an art space in Atlanta, Georgia, is hosting a show and auction in aid of the Swift Cantrell Skatepark fund.

The online auction is open now until 7th December and the show opens with a reception on 8th December. The exhibits are 53 painted boards by well known US artists including Mike Giant, Alex Pardee, Shepard Fairey, Dalek, Faile, Paul Frank and Tim Biskup. You can preview the artwork HERE.

All boards start at $100 and bids are in $50 increments.

Initially I thought this was a great way of getting hold of more affordable, original work by artists who usually carry a hefty price ticket, but it isn't just an online auction. The online bidding closes on the 7th, and if you are the winning online bid you have to pay in full via paypal before the 8th. Then, unfortunately for online bidders, the auction reopens at the opening reception, so online bidders who have paid up, can still get outbid and will have their money returned. They suggest a way round this - online bidders bid the maximum their willing to pay to ensure they aren't outbid or couldn't bid anymore anyway. But, unlike ebay-type online auctions, whatever you bid you pay. So you will have to pay your maximum bid, even if at the opening reception no one else came close to you. I personally think this is a tad unfair. I think it would be better if all bids were online only, and the auction opened after the reception to make it a level bidding-field, but what do I know...
