Barcelona is not dead. Repression creates a backlash and from June 29- July 1, 2007 this backlash was released on the walls of seven different locations throughout the city in the form of the Difusor Stencil Meeting. Attracting nearly 100 stencil artists from all over Europe, South America, and the United States the Difusor festival saw unprecedented and incredible juxtapositions and compositions rise out of what at first might have seemed a Tower of Babel of varied styles, talents, experiences, and languages…

Put a medium in the hand of an artist and you’re bound to get a result. Put a few hundred cans of spraypaint, courtesy of the Difusor Stencil Meeting, in the hands of 100 graffiti and stencil artists and you know you’re going to get some overspray onto the streets of Barcelona...

French graphic collective Sainte-Machine is currently having a very interesting show called "Logorrhée Publique" at the museum of contemporary art (CAPC) in Bordeaux, France. 10 artists who went to school together and spread out all over the country after art college come together once again for a fascinating group exhibition.

Beware! Two new smashing shows coming up: the Belgian Hell'O Monsters collective at Extrabold in Luxembourg (opening October 19th) and Flemish illustrator Ward Zwart at Choosy in Brussels (opening October 13)...

Apart from being one of the most fun artists to watch in action Sakristan is a great friend of mine, and she's having her first solo show in Barcelona, titled Out of Here. It opens tomorrow Wednesday, October 10 at the new Rojo Gallery and if you're in Barcelona this week you won't want to miss it!

For those of you who aren't fluent in Italian (like myself) or who for some reason can't figure out what it says above let me explain...
Our good friends Bo 130 and Microbo are having a gallery show/filling up a space with their work before your very eyes. It's gonna be a celebration, their Visual Marriage! Modart presents Second Hand Smoke

Next to Art21, Modart is pleased to tickle your throat gently with its own brand of second hand smoke, an exhibition featuring a selection of young artists who live as art, who have risked to communicate, earned their street credentials and begun to stir up the hierarchies of fine visual arts.
2 rooms, 2 exhibitions, 1 rocking party in 1 tripped out amazing space.

This Canadian has had his amazing and curious characters and moving east to west and back again for years, mostly along the Great North American Freight Lines. This November 3 he will station himself in the Carmichael Gallery in Los Angeles. We here at Modart also had a chance to catch up with him, keep your eyes peeled on the News for an upcoming interview...

Sometimes it takes the right aesthetic to make us realize just how twisted we all really are. It's not all candy corn and fairy tales, sometimes little red riding hood is the one holding the knife and the wolf is really a helpless grandmother. Victor Castillo has made it his life's work to analyze and please with his dark yet humorous paintings. Next week he will be opening a solo show at the Iguapop Gallery in Barcelona, read on to find out details.

This saturday our good friends, BTOY, will be rocking out with a show at the great new Nothing Xulu Store in Girona, right outside Barcelona. Yeah it might seem like a pain in the ass to get out there, but it'll be more than worth it! Don't miss the details, read more...
There's Will saying I Love You while he washes his hands ....

We were driving back towards Brussels, getting ready to crawl onto the ferry, when we had the awkward experience of having to deal with French cops, in French, while in England? Europe is indeed getting confusing. Starts to sound like Democracy. What does it mean – Europe? Israel qualifies in Europe for the World Cup. You’re not unlikely to hear Europeans saying there will never be another war in Europe, then excluding the Balkans from the content. Borders are weird. I think this has nothing to do with why Mr. Jago seems to eliminate them from his work.

Printmaking has a loooong history of being an amazing way to democratize artwork, but don't we have the internet, magazines, and books to spread artwork across the globe now? True, but that is no reason that this tradition isn't as important as ever for the simple fact that we can see and feel that there is something special about holding an original print that both the artist and the printer have had their hands and minds deeply involved in.

One of the most anticipated shows of 2007 is coming up in two weeks! From November 10 (opening night from 19h) until December 8, Galerie L.J. Beaubourg in Paris will be showing a mesmerizing group installation of this threesome of modern day street culture related artists... The ever so graceful poster maker Swoon, stencil artist Chris Stain and documentary photographer Mike "the Polaroid Kidd" Brodie are teaming up as we speak to build an exhibition we'll (hopefully) never forget. An update on this one will follow after our visit Saturday after next!
Frieze – did the illiterate cops take it literally? Or is this some sort of artistic statement?
Art Fairs – erm, well, to oversimplify and grossly exaggerate (and keep with the spirit of an art fair), these are like any other sort of trade shows, but have the particular characteristic of being a breeding ground where vampires can indulge their sense of noblesse by thirsting on the sexy and so called insane; a variation on the stock market cowboy scene that bubbled and burst, but only because fetish, lust and desire squeeze into the equation thus screwing it up.

Amidst wild fires and havoc in Southern California what better place to host one of the strangest titled shows I can remember with some blazing new works by the Australian-born artists Anthony Lister and Mark Whalen aka Kill Pixie and the San Diego based Kelsey Brookes. Lab101 Gallery in Culver City will be opening the show this Saturday Nov. 3, 7-10pm. These three have been tearing it up across the globe on their own, together this is surely one not to miss. Rumor has it there may even be an endearingly drunken fool in a spiderman outfit lovingly annoying the shit out of all in attendance. I really wish I could make it to see this one! Check out more info about the show and the artists.

Faith 147
Colors and size, contents and concern … the work has a harsh impact, and the artist appears to have the same burden … strong and sensitive, sweet and militant …
Born in Cape Town, Faith47 is the latest artist to join our online gallery. Here is a taste of her work and some segments of conversation sent into us by Sarah Marie Arndt.
