I just love to discover the work of great artists I never knew about before and Jo Brouillon is definitely one of them. He's currently showing a selection of recent drawings under the title of "Cante mon bel Ucello" at the gallery of his hometown Bordeaux's biggest book shop Mollat through the month of November and it looks just amazing. Visit the expo and comfortably get lost in his great detailing, cut-and-pasting, typography and use of materials that make you want to get started on some drawings too.

Autumn is here and it's back to school for the kiddies, but it seems like there's more than one of us here at Modart who is getting schooled a bit. I recently was lucky enough to be introduced to the work of an artist I hadnt known about before, Mizzo. Her linework and characters go from beautifully simple to mesmerizingly complex, sometimes in the same piece. And her work seems to be as versatile as they come, going from walls to sketches to canvases to digital and all back again. And now there's a chance to check out her work together in her new solo show in Basel, Switzerland.

Not really, but we’re wired, work in progress and sleep will come later …

Yesterday 2nd Hand Smoke opened up in Cologne and we’re pretty stoked. Smash137 is not just writing his name. The crude and refined crack technique he’s busted out, left a mark that every train passing through Cologne will see …

A very peculiar group show is launching this week, bringing together 11 French artists in their capital city. The list of participants looks very promising (a.o. Carakter Atypik, Julien Kedryna, LLCoolJo, N'Roll and Specio) and the concept is as well: the expo will consist of two parts showing for two weeks in total. One week an exhibition with artworks in black and white will be running, after that a colour exhibition will be mounted by the same artists. Let's check it out.

For all of you who missed out on the opening night, there's only one solution... Go visit this amazing expo while it's still on! Using waste materials like cardboard, old newspapers, driftwood and found objects, these three artists working in different media were able to build a common world that is mesmerizing, inventive and inspirational at the same time.

This is not Cologne’s most eligible bachelor. This is the guy who seemed to enjoy himself at our party a few weeks back. This is also the guy who put a sloppy, useless, fat pen tag all over one of the artworks. Nice one buddy, way to destroy with purpose.

Paris is always on the move, so at the end of November another interesting looking group show's opening up there (left). Exhibition organised by Arts Factory at Espace Beaurepaire + flyer design by the Jeanspezial collective = can't go wrong :)
On the other hand, also in Switzerland an expo has been running since a month or so that looks worthwhile (right): "An Exhibition of Unspeakable Things", works by 100 artists inspired by H.P. Lovecraft's "Commonplace Book".

Zargorkian Spective coming to Antwerp.

As the international press proclaims the end of Belgium near, and Belgians continue to not really give a shit about anything in particular, a new nation has entered the debate on what will become of Europe’s capital … as of now their political position has not been clearly stated. It could be left left, which becomes right, or far right, which is way out in left fields, but most likely it will not be a position one can pinpoint on existing scales.

Two brand new solo shows will be presented this weekend at contemporary art gallery Perugi in Padova, Italy. Laura Paperina's illustrations and Damiano Nava's photographs are very different, yet share a common interest in the opposition between what things look like from afar and what things really are when you take a second look. It'll definitely make for an interesting combination, so make sure to stop by if you can...
