Book Club: Tom Gauld

hunterandpainter1.jpg

Tom Gauld’s penmanship has been intruiging me for years. I’m a devoted fan of his detailed work, the clear lines he draws, the intricate texture in his shadows and objects, his witty and dry British humour since the day I stumbled upon it.

Book Club: Herbert Baglione

baglione1.jpg

The intro to this book where the first pages turn from white into grey into black is simply genius. And at first sight this even is a black and white book but when you look a little harder, you’ll quickly understand that Herbert Baglione is an artist of colour shades, where blue, orange, brown and gold meet night and day.

A Week in The Life of a Lad

6.jpg
Recently four of our favorite geezers (TLP, Pez, Flying Fortress, and Eine) went to Brooklyn to show Ad Hoc Art and the rest of the NYC crowd what's up on this side of the ocean. All four of them rocked the show but here I want to focus specifically on one geezer who we all know and love, Chaz aka The London Police aka TLP aka Big Geezer.

E Pluribus Venom

obey1.jpg

This book by Shepard Fairey aka Obey Giant makes a great object, and is a catalogue of the works he presented at his art show with Jonathan LeVine in New York, June 2007. Re-using images extracted from e.g. pop culture and old propaganda posters, Fairey creates his own art with symplified forms and restricted colour use.

"New Yorkers don’t care about art, they care about pets"

splash_bgrd3.jpg

Having grown up not far from the newly infamous Village Pet Store and Charcoal Grill I can imagine that without all the hype this little petshop might have well gone fairly unnoticed amongst the everyday freaks and weirdness in the neighborhood. But we all know that Sir Banksy (ha, when will that happen??) plays his media well and the hype is building, case point right here. The fact is this is a show unlike any he's done before and it deserves respect. He's gone from exploiting animals to creating work discussing the exploitation of animals and from massive warehouses to this unassuming storefront, and the only elephants in the room are the pricetags (I assume).

While we might have spent our summers painting, partying, enjoying the warm weather, and travelling I doubt many of us were able to approach the level that our friend here takes it. His work is contstantly developing, growing, mutating, and pushing things to a new level. The update of his website from this summer proves it. Urban Cookbook Launch, part 1 LONDON

London%20Shot.jpg

“Urban Cookbook”, a delicious mix of art, music and cooking served straight up in a beautifully presented book written, directed and produced by King Adz. The book showcases the experiences that Adz has developed through his intrinsic interaction with an urban fraternity, which exists beyond the walls of commercial use or value. To develop this book, Adz took public transport, ate street food and met the artists who breathe life into all of this. The subsequent adventures, which he has translated into the international language of food, reflect his experiences and his belief in the concept of storytelling, through food, text, images and music.
