Big Expectations

obama.jpg
Today is November 4th, US Election Day. Many of us have been waiting for this day for 8 years now and nearly everybody is in agreement this is one of the biggest and most historic elections to ever happen in the USA. As we've heard many times Americans like things BIG, and with all the support pouring out from the creative community for Barack Obama it's only natural that size would come into play. Jorge Rodriguez Gerada seems to have trumped them all in his Expectation project by creating a portrait of our (hopefully) new leader in the sand of the beach in Barcelona, Spain. The size of the portrait: 445 ft. by 264 ft. wide (139.28x82.67 meters).

22-year old Vienna-based Isabella Ess aka Joy Mädi Evil loves icecream and would love to live in a sepiacolored world.

New "Dans La Marge" books!

arts1.jpg

For a few years now, these great little books have been coming out. France has a good reputation for underground publications and Arts Factory is one of the big stimulators of that scene, supporting young artists with a do-it-yourself spirit. Now they've organised a big expo with all the authors of the whole book series in Paris, to launch the four new volumes and present a group show that looks like it will rock the house... Read our book reviews!

Shag and Calma at Jonathan Levine Gallery

calmashag.jpg
Two artists literally worlds apart will find some common ground in the city whose residents like to think it's the center of the Earth, New York of course. Jonathan Levine Gallery will be hosting Shag's Voyeur and Stephan Doitschinoff's (aka Calma) Novo Mundo, opening side by side Friday November 21st.

L'Atlas: D'un monde l'autre

latlasshowblog.jpg
This Saturday Il Trifoglio Nero in Genova will be presenting L'Atlas' first solo show in Italy. Not only will he be showing his newest works indoors but he will replicate a performance and installation he originally created outside the Pompidou Center this past May. Il Trifoglio Nero is also publishing a limited edition print of that original event and a calatog of all of L'Atlas's works to date! Damn, they are psyched to have him and if you are anywhere nearby you should be psyched too.

Book Club: Transfer Catalog

transfer_cover.jpg
For a show as grandiose as the Transfer show organized by Lucas Ribeiro in Porto Alegre this past summer it was to be expected that the catalog of the event would be equally impressive. And without being over the top about it this catalog does a very nice job showing the incredibly (and successfully) ambitious show. In addition to intense documentation of the artwork itself there are in depth discussions of the artists and the history of their varied yet interconnected art movements from Brazil and globally that were highlighted in this show. This of course includes all that we have been raised to adore and worship in our own way: skateboarding, graffiti, fanzines, comic books, photography, urban life, and of course their various mutations into the fine art world. There's even a DVD included showing it all to you in real and unreal time.

Book Club: Gente by BlexBolex

gente_dormidoenfermo.jpg
I was just trying to waste time in a book store when I curiously picked up Gente (People) by the French illustrator BlexBolex, it happened to be in the children's section. After looking at maybe 6 pages of it and a quick glance at the price tag (15 euros) I immediately had to buy it. No I don't have a kid and no it's not easy to make me buy a book. If you were me you would probably do the same, check out why.

HERBERT BAGLIONE: Two Broken Knees

Tomorrow night, Friday the 21st, Herbert Baglione will be opening his new and sure to be absolutely sick show Two Broken Knees at Lazarides in London. His work blows me away and I would love to see the show firsthand. Since that's not possible I've managed to find some digital replacements that will have do. The video above is from his section in Upper Playground's artist documentary The Run Up and the photos next are some of what I won't get to see in person tomorrow night.

Book Club: 25 Disegni

25-drawings-1%281%29.jpg
Just recently our good friend Davide Zucco/Rekal got in touch to let us know that he and Dem have released a new and very affordable (5 euros!) publication of their drawings. Fittingly titled 25 Drawings the book is a split effort with each artist putting forth 25 of their drawings printed with brown ink on recycled paper.

Book Club: Nigel Peake

nigel1.jpg

My all-time favourite Irish is Nigel Peake. Not only does he know perfectly how to get you on the funny train being one of my bestest friends, Peach's drawings are so amazingly detailed and clever that you can't help but love them and look at them for hours. So when a bunch of those are being published into a book, of course I want you all to buy it!

NCC Goes Far East

ncc_takeawayheader.jpg
It seems all winds are blowing east these days. If you're in Tokyo this Monday December 1 make sure to go over to Take Away at Calm & Punk Gallery, Stephen Smith/Neasden Control Centre's first solo show in the country. Starting that day he will be installing and creating works live in the gallery. His work will focus on the homogenization of cultures through globalized food consumption, mass production, mass consumption, and chain stores. Tokyo seems like a hell of a place to take on such a topic, don't you think?
