Book Club: Böhn Hase

We recently received a great book by the artist Gijs Huijgen which he also combined with an interesting street project. In today's failing economy unemployment has already hit new heights in many countries, the jobs available might not be the ones we normally find at an interim agency, and the "run down" urban areas are set to grow enormously. Böhn Hase is a yellow pages of sorts with beautiful illustrations of the various people and jobs that occupy these run down neighborhoods and keep them afloat.
From the artist: "what started as a portrait of a neighborhood became an illustrated telephonebook. It's about the people in this "problem area" and their
ways to get money."

While I'm getting almost as tired of hearing about "Crisis Art" as I was about "Obama Art" the clever and more personal scope of this project, which does hold a lot of relevance in the economy situation, is fantastic and unique. In addition the illustrations are gorgeous and have a lot of personality in them, of both the artist and the subject of the portrait.
In addition to releasing the book he wheatpasted many of the portraits up around his city, bringing his portraits back to the people.
The book is 144 pages, 17 x 24 cm, with 100 portraits. Price - 25€
