Stephen Powers/ESPO was invited to contribute to T-shirt Monthly, a subscription service that sends you a new shirt every month for six months. He not-so-subtly expressed his feelings on "street art" in this rainbowtastic design. Although in Italy it might read as Street Art is peace since their peace flag took a big cue from everybody else's gay pride flag. T-shirt monthly has been working for some time with a well-curated selection of artists and with feelings on street art aside it's worth checking out. Read on for the link and to see some other shirts that they've produced.
Our good friend Anthony Lister has just landed in San Francisco to set up his newest solo show at Fifty24SF Gallery, opening this Thursday February 5th. Like the show's title says, he's got a whole mess of new "Magic Tricks" up his sleeve and as we know from everything Anthony touches this show is sure to be gold.
C215's intricate and very recognizable stencils have been gracing the walls of seemingly every city in the world these days. South America, North America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East all have been touched by this man's can. He's obviously on a mission and at the same time published an impressive stencil book, Stencil History X. Both ATM Gallery and Intoxicated Demons Gallery in Berlin will be hosting work by C215 and some of his French compatriots opening on February 13th.
This Saturday, February 7th Miscelänea Gallery in Barcelona will be hosting an expo of our good friend Landry A.'s photos and the release of his new fanzine titled "Fucking in the Morning Time is better than a cup of Haferschleim." He was the official photographer for the epic three week Big Geezers Tour and 72 of his most personal photographic memories are contained within its pages of this zine along with texts by Modart's very own Harlan Levey. Don't miss this one.
Lutz from Kingdrips just dropped us an email about his new personal website. Lots of good work on there, fonts to download, and plenty of other visual goodies. Check it out at www.notoveruntilitsdone.com
Charlie Isoe has been working non-stop for his upcoming solo show at Circle Culture Gallery in Berlin. He was nice enough to send us over some pics of the new work and it looks sick. The show will open next Thursday, Feb. 12th and will be up until April, so there's plenty of time to check it out. And from what we've seen so far Isoe has taken it to the next level so don't sleep on this show.
Martin Bodo aka DJ Bodoo hails from Pecs, Hungary, which just happens to be one of the cities chosen as the European Cultural Capital for 2010. He's a DJ, a photographer, and simply put an all around artist. His work can be seen in a show in Pecs titled FOTOsokk (meaning photo shock) that has been set up in Cella Septichora, a 1700 year old Roman ruin that forty years ago was discovered beneath the the concrete, glass, metal, and modern life of the city's downtown area. Bodoo's kaleidoscopic architectural photos seem very fitting in such a unique setting.
We just got word from our friend Faith 47 that artSPACE Berlin will be putting on a group show of South African artists entitled "Bigwood Berlin". We've seen some great work coming from there and this gallery has strong connections to the continent and has introduced numerous African artists to European eyes. This show will include the likes of Maaike Bakker, Wesley van Eeden, Faith47, Mitchell Horn, Ulricke Lourens, Gabriel Metcalfe, and about thirteen other artists that Faith describes as "some of her favorite s.a. illustrators and artists." That's enough of a recommendation for us.
This is one is for our NYC people. One of our favorites, Maya Hayuk, will be opening her newest solo show, Sexy Gazebo: Believing is Believing, tomorrow Friday Feb. 13th at Cinders Gallery in Brooklyn. The range of her work is and has been constantly evolving and transforming in a very trippy, intricately detailed, color soaked frenzy. I imagine the opening of this full-space installation to be something like munching down an eighth of mushrooms with a few hundred people, stripping off the normal NYC pretention, and enjoying the good vibes.
This Friday, February 20th Jonathan Levine Gallery will be hosting side-by-side solo shows by Mars-1 and Nouar. Mars' show will be titled "Nuclear Mystic" while Nouar will let you know "You Look Good Enough to Eat." These artists' works are completely different yet both take us to incredibly vivid imaginary worlds, and with both of them incorporating their works into site-specific installations we can count on them to be bridging the gap between their worlds and ours.
Although I may have crossed it before only recently did I rediscover and really appreciate the work of Kofie'One. It also seems to be the perfect time to share it as he's about to open a solo show at Zero One Gallery in Los Angeles on Saturday, February 28th. His geometric work is at the same time incredibly organic, and working within a certain color palette Vintage Futurism is exactly what comes to mind.
A little while ago we reported about Dale Grimshaw's newest solo show at Signal Gallery in London. We just got a note from them letting us know what a great show it was and of course a couple photos from the opening with tons more linked to on flickr. Check it out.
1 Day, 4 Teams and noone knows what the others will contribute to the project... Tobias Wüstefeld, Johannes Vogt, Martin Kaumanns, Holger Herrmann, Katrin Hirsch,Robert Matzke, Hannes Richert, Tim Brüning
...just in german!
Wild Style influenced multiple generations of graffiti writers and other artists and in this video the Smart Crew from NYC do their own tribute to this seminal film. They've bombed the hell out of NYC and halfway across the globe and at the same time organize community based projects like their Christmas gift giveway. Check out more about them at their blog here. This video comes via 12ozprophet. And click on for another great Smart video especially for the graff heads.
"Hymn to Beauty" will be UK artist Hush's first solo show in the USofA and will be hosted at the artistically globetrotting Carmichael Gallery. The show will open up on March 5th at 7pm and you'll get a chance to see brand new works from Hush using acrylic, screenprinting, spraypaint, ink, and tea on canvas and wood as well as a site specific installation. Hush's work speaks loud and this body of work brings his mashed-up graffiti and graphic inspired artwork to address the female form, power, decay, innocence, sexuality, and the fusion of Eastern and Western cultures.
Yesterday night, Ephameron's solo show at Per Square Metre gallery in Melbourne opened up. Her sensitive images all blend into a colourful whole, inspired by the local architecture. Make sure to pass by if you're in the neighbourhood because this one will only be up until March 1!
Studio David Johannson is saying what we're all thinking. This temporary art project has turned an empty store space into a Bad (and empty) Bank. Sounds exactly like the fucking CEO's temporary projects as well. Thanks banks. Check out more about David's work and this project at www.davidjohannson.de.
MyMo just got back from some fun weeks in NYC and has given the word that her new homepage and funpage are now officially up and rocking. This girl's been painting her unique characters and leaving her funky style throughout Berlin and the world for awhile now and will be having a solo show at ATM Gallery later this month. You heard it here first so check back for the official info coming soon. Now go check out her website. www.mymonstersworld.com
On March 5th while Hush opens his solo show in the front room of Carmichael Gallery Flip from Sao Paulo will be showing LA a whole 'nother world and style of work with his own solo show, "Seiva Bruta", in their back room. His newest body of work will be making parallels in nature between plants' sap and the blood of animals. The nerves, veins, roots, feelings, and diseases will all be expressed with patterns and organic forms on canvas, paper, wood, and integrated in a site-specific installation to show our our beastly nature.
We recently received an email from England's own SHOK-1 giving us the good news that he's just launched a website that will highlight the immense body of work he's created from 1984 on. It's going to be updated daily with works new and old, like this SHOK banger from 1994. Check out this lifer's life told in graff at www.shok1.com/shokthen.

Two masters of their own style, Remed and Zbiok, are joining forces in their two person show titled "It Hurts" opening tomorrow night at Brooklynite Gallery. The two have been working for a long time and have set themselves apart with unique styles, concepts, and approaches to their work both in the streets and indoors . New York hasn't seen anything like it and it'll surely be one not to miss, the show opens tomorrow Sat. Feb 28th.
