We just got word from our friend Ana Ferraz in Porto Alegre about a great exhibition, Campos e Antenas (Fields and Antennas), by the artist Talita Hoffman. The show will be up through May 31st at the Museu do Trabalho. Ana explains more about the artist and the space and she sent plenty of visual treats to back it all up.
Here's more news from Brazil, this time from Sao Paulo's Choque Cultural. Tomorrow night, May 2nd, they will open a massive group exhibition fittingly titled 'Caligrafia' which will show the work of nearly 50 artists notably working with calligraphy and lettering. Eduardo Saretta curated the show and from the looks of it has done an excellent job. Some of the artists include Chaz Bojorquez, Eine, Retna, Loomit, Saber, Zosen, Calma, KR, Ripo, Remed, El Tono, Fefe Talavera, and tons more from all over the globe. The show will stay up for nearly two months, we just wish we were planning a trip down there in that time.
Tonight, May 2nd, is the opening of Sam Flores' major solo exhibition, 'Ego, Addiction, & Other Bedtime Stories' at Subliminal Projects in Los Angeles. Ripo got a chance to ask him a few questions about dark and light, traveling, artist branding, and guacamole. Read on for the full interview.
Ron English is only days away from opening his first solo show in London, entitled Lazarus Rising, at the Elms Lester Paintings Rooms. In his signature surrealist style he will continue to add and reveal new meanings in our already familiar images and icons. The gallery will also be releasing a limited edition hardbound catalog of the show at the opening and of course the artist will be on hand to sign copies. Also be sure to check back here for a full interview with Ron English to coincide with the opening.
We're really happy to rip this bit of news on you. The Arty Farty Gallery in Cologne will be opening this Saturday with a rock solid debut show by the likes of William Head (better known asWayne Horse to some of you), Morcky, and the Boghe. The show titled "Prick Wall" will open May 9th with a ton of new works and massive installation and will also see a release of six limited edition prints by the artists and a show t-shirt. Also be able to check out the spanking new entrance mural (see above) created by Ripo, Morcky, William Head, Brendan Monroe, and Evah Fan. This is only the beginning of some very strong shows coming soon from them so keep your eyes open.
Last weekend was the opening of Logan Hicks' and Broken Crow's pop-up show, "Brokenhorse," at an abandoned bank in NYC. Logan sent us over some great photos of the whole event and this video from Arrested Motion. You can also check out all the works and sales info at www.brokenhorseart.com.
Tomorrow night, May 6th, at Shadow's Space in Philadelphia "Climb in the Back Window" will be opening. This will be a solid group show of paintings, photographs, installations, and other dirty things by the likes of Anthony Lister, Cheryl Dunn, Ricky Powell, Skullphone, Ale Zuek, Curtis Kulig, Luiza Sa, Augustine Kofie, Erik Otto, Various and Gould, and the curator of it all, iO Wright. We don't get news about many events in Philadelphia so it's definitely refreshing and sounds like it will bring some new blood to the Philly streets (and the gallery).
ArtKENORtures (or art-chitectures by KENOR) opened last month at Holala Plaza in Barcelona. We weren't able to make it to the opening but Kenor sent over some nice photos of his intricately architectural and colorfully abstract work from the show. It will stay up through June 16th so there's still plenty of time to check it out.
But 3 exhibitions in one night. That's how many shows Carmichael Gallery will be opening tomorrow night, May 7th. The front gallery will see a solo show of new works by the Brazilian artist Thais Beltrame, the sole female member of the Familia Baglione. The back room will be treated to an all-star lineup courtesy of Carmichael Gallery's own collectors, including works by Banksy, Bast, Barry Mcgee, David Choe, Swoon, Will Barras, Space Invader, and plenty more. And to top it all off one of our favorites, Alexone, will be exhibiting new works in the gallery's Showcase space. That's one hell of a night in Los Angeles.
Last week Boris Hoppek opened his newest show at a temporary gallery space in Hamburg hosted by heliumcowboy. The show saw tons of new work, installations, and the release of a show catalog which is also the second edition of Hoppek's renowned La Vagina magazine. It will stay up through June 5th so make sure to go see it for yourself. If you can't well then you're in luck because you can see photos from the installation, vernissage, and the artworks here.
We received another great report from our friend Ana Ferraz, this time about the Brazilian talent Mateus Grimm. He's worked for years on the streets of Porto Alegre, had shows all over Brazil, painted trains with Os Gemeos, and has now opened his newest show 'Atadura' at A CASA Gallery in Curitiba. Read more to learn about this artist and for a massive photo report of his work from the show.
It is the first stage of the project which intends to show the confrontation of different artistic attitudes deeply rooted in the culture of graffiti.
The project is an outcome of co-operation between the Institute of Art called ‘Wyspa’ located in the old areas of Gdańsk Shipyard and a group of young artists, organizers of culture activities and art curators from Tri-city.

Ron English is an all-American artist. Not in the flag waving, Mcdonalds craving, Superbowl Sunday kind of way, more like the revolutionary who won't sit on the sidelines while the King and Queen take all his money and make a fool of him. He's been using his talents on and off the streets for over 25 years now and tonight, May 8th, he brings it back to the Queen herself (well to her city at least). To coincide with the opening of his first London solo show, 'Lazarus Rising' at the Elms Lester Painting Rooms, Ripo got a chance to ask this iconic artist a few questions. Read on for the full interview.
After the publication of the benefit magazine, two shows and an online auction are now being organized, all to help out a deaf girl who recently got operated to hear again! Come out for the first opening tomorrow night at De Winkelhaak in Antwerp and next week at A St Medard in Brussels, support a good cause and check out some great art :)
The reports are in from the Graffiti Argentina book release that went down in Barcelona back in March. Here are photos from the Barcelona event with Kenor, Zosen, and Caru. Coming soon: the London release.
Our friend Pez, the Barcelona legend, has got one more reason to be smiling and so do we. He's just launched his first official website and there is a ton of material on there. Fitting since he's been painting since '99 and has basically been going non-stop ever since. Take some today to check out la web del pez. www.lawebdelpez.com
Shida is a young Australian artist who's spent the past few months roaming around Europe looking to learn about, and leave his mark on, the world. This Thursday, May 21st he opens his first European solo show, 'Fate's Fantasy' at Vienna's Inoperable Gallery. He's already made an impression down in Australia and this is the perfect chance to come get to know his work for the first time in Europe.
As promised we bring you photos from the Graffiti Argentina book release in London. Festivities went down at the Pure Evil Gallery and saw painting by Caru (Argentina) and Roughe (UK), music by True Ingredients, and a crowd so uber-fashionable it kinda hurts.
Jason de Caires Taylor is like one of those divers in a fish tank except his fish tank is the ocean and he's actually creating the sculptural worlds that reside there. He's credited for building the first underwater sculpture park off Moiliniere Bay, Grenada and his work has become widely renowned as it creates amazingly surreal worlds that look almost ancient already. But much more than simply looking nice his works promote coral reef growth and help rebuild the environments they live in. We like it a lot. Check out more of his work at www.underwatersculpture.com. via
Next Thursday, May 28th The Toasters along with 15 other great talents will bring together a collaborative exhibition, 'Trespassers of the World Unite'. The UK's Toasters (going since 1999) will be joined by from some good friends of ours like Will Barras, Bomb Kid, Butch, Crackrock, Dicy, Eco, Erosie, Influenza, Mr Jago, Late, Paris, Phet, Rabodiga, space3 and Zime.
We want to remind you that the Sarah Benefit Auction is ending this afternoon. Some amazing work at (still) very low prices. You've got four hours left to get yours.
Davide Zucco/Rekal sent us word that he'll be presenting some of his newest work as part of the finalists' exhibition of the Como Contemporary Contest, a contemporary arts competition in the town of Como, Italy. The show will be presented this Saturday, May 30th at 6pm. There are 20 finalists showing their work but I think we already know who the winner is (seriously). If you're near Como pass by to see some great artwork.
Great news from Kill Pixie, his newest solo show is just about to pop at the Merry Karnowsky Gallery in LA. This Saturday, May 30th his new show 'I'll Hit You Up Tomorrow' will open along with a collaborative installation in the project room with the band Autolux. Also, since this is Hollywood after all, the actor Tim Roth will be "hosting" the whole evening. I'm not exactly sure what that means but if he's buying we're drinking.
We are in South Africa these days and met some nice People here - Faith 47 connected us with some other local writers and artists...this is definetely one of the warmest welcomes i ever had when i went to a city where i knew noone before...check out the pictures..
The Reinking Project seems to be one of those epic shows that will inspire almost anyone lucky enough to visit it. It includes one of the most amazing lineups we can think of: Akay, Herbert Baglione, Banksy, Blu, Dave the Chimp, Ben Eine, Shepard Fairey, Mark Jenkins, Os Gêmeos, Space Invader, Swoon, Zevs, and many more. The show is taking place in Bremen, Germany at the Weserburg from May 16 through August 30th, so there's time to make your travel arrangements. Read on for some photos and a link to a very solid photo report of the show by Just.
Vicious Gallery in Hamburg will be proudly presenting Dave Decat's first solo show opening this Saturday, May 30th. His illustrations have previously been seen in two Carhartt campaigns and in a delicately messy way he gives us his own tattooed take on the underbelly of our society. For his show he will be showing original drawings as well as a number of very limited prints.
MyMo opened her latest solo show, 'Junkyard,' at the Pure Evil Gallery two weeks ago. We just got a nice photo report from the artist herself. Read on for more info and don't forget the show is up until June 21st.
Tonight two calligraphic masters hailing from California, Retna and Chaz Bojorquez, will be opening their two-person show at the Don Gallery in Milan. The work of these two artists has spanned generations in LA and globally and for sure they will put together something amazing for 'Follow the Line'.
More good news from Milan, this time from our good friends Bo and Microbo. After setting up their recent show at Avantgarden gallery in Milan they hit the streets and took back an infamous poster hall of fame on Via Palermo. Here are some nice before, after, and during shots. Nice work.
