El Mac & Retna "Vagos y Reinas"

_MG_0281.jpg
On September 26th a bomb dropped on Santa Monica, California. Retna and El Mac opened their first collaborative show. Although they've painted their way up the ranks and collaborated for years on the streets this is the first time they've come together in a gallery setting, the prestigious Robert Berman Gallery to be specific. The show, 'Vagos y Reinas,' is up until October 17th, if you get a chance to stop by and see it you'll be treated to a larger than life look at the masterful work these two have created on their own and together.

Sickboy Temple

image001.jpg
It was a cold rainy day (well we can just assume that cause it was in the UK) in 1999 when Sickboy first decided to leave aside his letters and paint a temple image on the wall for the first time. It's now become an icon of England's street art scene and on the 10 year anniversay has now been immortalized in a resin model.

Although making "street art toys" isn't the most original idea we're always supporting artists who bust their asses and do-it-themselves. In his own words: “Nobody said it was going to be easy, and this definitely wasn’t. I’ve been laughed at by model makers, sneered at by spotty adolescents from Games Workshop, breathed in enough turpentine to keep a glue sniffer happy for years, and ruined my best shirt at the printers. But I couldn’t let this one slip through the net.”

If you don't want to let this one slip through either you can pick up one of the limited editions models for yourself at sickboy.aerosolcolours.com

Adam Neate: A New Understanding

%28C%29%20Adam%20Neate%20-%20header.jpg
Over the past few years Adam Neate has left thousands of his cardboard works on London's streets for everyday people to stumble across and enjoy as art for art's sake, or more likely for street art hungry collectors to go ravage and horde. Tomorrow, Oct. 9th, his second solo show at the Elms Lesters Paintings Rooms, , 'A New Understanding,' will open up. Neate has taken his work to a new 3-dimensional level and the results are 22 almost cubist and futurist representations of everyday life. If you're a fan of Neate's work this show will be one not to miss.

Miss Van's 'Lovestain'

poup.png
Last week Miss Van left a big mark (or stain if you prefer) on London with her largest solo show to date, and her first solo show in the UK, at Stolen Space. The show will take over both exhibition spaces with retrospective and new works. It is only up for one more week until October 18th, so make it through to see her newest works as she has come a long way from her cuter street days and has developed her style into much more sensual and darker works.

Simon Birch at Carmichael Gallery

birch-1.jpg
Simon Birch followed his art from England to Hong Kong in the mid-90's where he went from construction worker to painting full time. We'd never heard of his work before but his portraits definitely have something unique and got our attention. Also nice to see the Carmichael Gallery showing some new styles, although it's already impossible to keep track of the hundreds of artists whose work has passed through their doors in the few years they've been open. Birch's new show will open this evening, Oct. 8th, at the Carmichael Gallery in Los Angeles.

Thinkspace Triple Threat

Esao%20AndrewstonyPhilip_header.jpg
It was just a little over a month ago that the Modart Group Show featuring the work ofNomad and many other of our close friends closed at Thinkspace Gallery in Los Angeles. We're happy to be letting you know that tonight, Oct. 9th, Thinkspace will be opening up three new shows in their space with the likes of Esao Andrews, Tony Philippou, and Joshua Mays. These three painters each bring something unique to the table although the three styles certainly fit together focusing on the surreal and figurative. If you're around Los Angeles check them out.

LA Galleries at the Beyond Eden Art Fair

BE_postcard%20-%20front%20%28Large%29.jpg
Los Angeles' art scene has stamped out a solid place for itself over the years and the
"urban contemporary" (or however you want to call it) scene is no different. As you know we post regularly about a number of LA Galleries including Thinkspace, Carmichael, New Image Art, Subliminal Projects, and others. Opening to the public tomorrow, Oct. 10th, will be the Beyond Eden Art Fair, the first LA-gallery-only contemporary art fair. You can check out a sneak peak of the setup here and learn more about the fair here.

Lucas Price: 'Jesus Help Me Find My Proper Place'

Dont-Let-IT-action.jpg
Lucas Price has dropped his moniker (you might better know him as London's Cyclops) to present a major new body of work at the Black Rat Press gallery. The show will open this Thursday, October 15th. From the looks and sound of it this show will be much more than spraypainted canvases and street works adapted to a gallery setting and will really be showing Price's most "mature" work to date. We like that although the art world takes itself so damn seriously that "Snoopy for President" is part of the artist's "mature" work. You can read a great interview with the Price over at Ponystep.com.

David Shillinglaw's 'Get Up an Antenna'

davidposter.copy2.jpg
David Shillinglaw is at it again opening yet another solo-show, 'Get Up an Antenna.' The one show will be open at two locations (not sure how that works, we guess there's just a ton of work), Macondo Islington and Macondo Shoreditch. Both open to the public this Wednesday, Oct. 14th. His work discusses chaos and confusion, for someone who multitasks like Shillinglaw that about makes sense. You can see his most recent blogging for Fecal Face here as well.

East Eric's Newest Invention

East Eric once again reminds us of the importance of innovation and invention. He's just recently perfected his self-described "Ultimate Tag Weapon." His printing shoes are self-inking, discrete, silent, will stand out from most anything else out there, and in about 2 minutes of walking you can see just how much they can do. More than anything these are a nice reminder to all of us to not just be happy with whatever tools that are produced and sold to us. Make your own or improve on what's there. Click on for a full photo report of the creation process.

The show is up through Oct. 31st and they've also released a print by Stefan Marx. We like where this story is headed.

The Ghost Village Project

According to Remi/Rough: "Curated by Agents of Change, The Ghostvillage was conceived as an antidote to a world of ever increasing safety and mediocrity. Six artists were given free reign of a never inhabited village on the west coast of Scotland – working on pristine walls Remi/Rough, Stormie, System, Timid, Derm and Juice 126 have created a gallery like no other…..and finally given the village the ghosts it deserves….. This looks like an unreal project, but only six artists for a whole Ghost Town??? Spotted on vandalog

Living Decay (fairy tales in the middle on nowhere)

Living Decay looks like an amazing project and is a great short film from Norway's Dolk and Pobel. Somehow they even got John Fekner to do the narration for the video. This is a great reminder of what a good idea and a well organized crew can put together. Although it looks like high-production value it also feels completely DIY, as it should. Go outside, meet some friends, go travel, and bring lots of paint.

D*Face in NYC's Meatpacking District

While on the topic of NYC and Jonathan Levine, here's a video we found of D*Face in action during his time in town. The video claims this was illegal but being familiar with NYC and the generally overzealous pile of pork that patrols its streets we somehow doubt it. Doesn't really matter anyway, it looks good.

NYSAT2 and Interview

renegagnon-709671.jpg
Last Sunday Jordan Seiler and others organized nearly 90 whitewashers and artists to go out for the second New York Street Advertising Takeover (NYSAT). The goal was to take back nearly 115 advertising spaces in lower Manhattan that have been illegally postered by various advertising companies. This was the second action of its kind and was met with a lot more readiness by both the police and the advertising companies, resulting in a few arrests and most of the artwork being covered up by new ads before the end of the day. You can learn a lot more about the movement by reading this great interview with Jordan Seiler from the people at Hyperallergenic.com. Check it out here.
