The Upset

Brilliant art book publisher Gestalten has done it again: their Winter 2009 collection is amazing. We read The Upset and were utterly impressed by the quality of the book, its selection of artworks featured and the sheer volume of the publication itself.

The Upset is a catalogue of young contemporary art, subdividing the book into six chapters of "Lowbrow", "Gothic", "Realism", "Illustration", "Character", "Urban Art", "Pattern" and "Expressionism". A lot of the artists featured are well-known ones, so it makes for a nice portfolio of their already pricey works for anyone to enjoy, an oversight of the regular big names in the alternative art scene, with a mention of a few fresh and surprising ones.
This book is about the return to the tradition of figurative art, using paint as a weapon of choice but being inspired by everyday life and social or political matters instead of putting the millionth nature mort or landscape on paper. The goal is the visual language, not the concept behind the piece, and emerging from underground subcultures, most of the artists featured in "The Upset" are definitely not interested in being part of the elitist art world, but want to create an own path with like-minded colleagues. They don't only reference to youth culture in their works, but also actively participate in it, using their commercial success to make ends meet and spread their message on a daily basis. Let's cheer them on as they grow!
